THE ROAD TAKEN – Chandan Das

About 240 million people around the world are heterozygous for thalassemia, 20 million in India alone. If both parents are carriers of the thalassemic trait, there is a 25 per cent chance that their child will have thalassemia major. About a hundred thousand are born each year with thalassemia major, of which around 5000 births occur in India.

THE ROAD TAKEN – Chandan Das

The Road Taken is a candid, well-researched, sensitive, personal narrative of a thalassemia patient weaving history, science, poetry, literature, and philosophy together. The author tries to step out of his self, view the world with love-filled eyes, with acceptance. It is a philosophic saga of the life of an individual against the Cosmic. The book exudes an extremely positive attitude of a person who has lived a meaningful life in spite of the ‘condition’ he was born with, and in the process, endears himself to the reader.

THE ROAD TAKEN – Chandan Das

I waited and waited. Often I wondered what it was all about, the pain in my arm, these dark, high-ceilinged halls overlooking the hot sandbanks of a river that came and disappeared of its own accord, very contrary to my idea of what a river should be like; this humble self-effacing little bottle of blood hanging inverted by my bedside and having some strange connection with my body and my life, and the passive, waiting figures of Father and Mother, gazing out across the valley of sand where a river once had flowed and now there was only a wash of fire. And I wondered about the other children; how had they come to this broken-walled, forested house, what brought them here?
